Policies
In order to provide the best possible service to children and parents
as well as the best possible professional development opportunities
for Ashland University students enrolled in its literacy courses,
the Becker Memorial Reading Center observes these policies:
- Parents and children will be asked to attend two conferences, one at the beginning and one of at the end of the tutoring.
- At the end of a semester of tutoring, parents will receive a letter summarizing their child’s progress and makes recommendations to support further growth in literacy. Other letters regarding goals for tutoring or describing child’s progress may also be provided.
- With a parents permission, tutors may make audio or video tapes of the child’s reading or writing. These will be erased after the last parent conference.
- Completion of the registration form does not mean acceptance into the program! Becker Center personnel will notify parents that their children have been accepted for tutoring. Children will be admitted to tutoring programs based on their ages and their reading difficulty.
- In order to safeguard children, parents must provide information regarding significant medical conditions, medications and food allergies, and a list of adults who are authorized to pick up each child from tutoring.
- Although a fee is charged to cover the expenses of providing tutors and materials, no child will be excluded from tutoring because of an inability to pay. Parents may request that the fee be waived when completing the registration forms. Otherwise, payment should be made prior to the beginning of tutoring.
