Welcome to the Dwight Schar College of Education:
I am pleased that you have joined us on the web. In exploring our site you will find a wonderfully rich teacher preparation history that has been integrated into our current mission of preparing pre-service and practicing teachers, administrators and human service personnel. Our vision is to be Ohio’s premier organization in the preparation of professional educators and selected human service personnel.
We believe that a quality education should provide the instruction, resources, and experience necessary to create a new type of educator: one who understands the nature of learning, social equity, cultural diversity; who values collaboration and teamwork; and who embraces the challenges in the profession. Our students stand among the top achievers in the state having an average pass rate on the state mandated PRAXIS series test of 97%.
Our human service programs are equally impressive. The Athletic Training program is fully accredited. The Sport Management program has an impressive placement record and the Exercise Science program is gaining in both strength and popularity. The Recreation programs are multi-faceted and very strong.
The College has recently opened two new “state of the art” facilities that have helped transform instruction. With a new Sport Sciences academic complex and a new College of Education building, we have enhanced our capabilities in all areas of programming and instruction.
The College of Education is a comprehensive college having over 30 licensure programs and 20 majors. We offer bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees. The College has over 65 full-time faculty, most of whom have the doctoral degree. The faculty bring both academic preparation and experience in the work world to our programs. The academic programs are delivered at Ashland and through its other four centers in Cleveland, Columbus, Elyria, and Massillon.
This College exists for the purpose to improve the quality of education and human services and the quality of life for those who live and work in the communities we serve. All of us in the College are constantly monitoring and analyzing local, state and national trends, enabling us to deliver the best programs possible.
The Schar College of Education takes very seriously the obligation of meeting the needs of individuals at various stages of their professional career. We are a value-added college in that we provide the extra attention and services needed to allow all of our students to experience the level of success they expect in a high quality private college education.
As the Interim Dean of the College of Education, I take great pride in the accomplishments of our faculty, staff and students.
