REC 161- Concepts in Recreation and Leisure 3 credits

A survey of the historical development or recreation and leisure and its corresponding philosophical and theoretical thought. Understanding of and ability to facilitates leisure lifestyles and use of leisure resources throughout the human life span.
REC 163- Leadership for Leisure Well Being 3 credits
Understanding of leisure service delivery systems, careers and professionalism. Interrelationships between leisure behavior and resources used during leisure experiences. Knowledge of and ability to used leadership techniques and strategies to organize and conduct leisure programs and services. Knowledge of the role and content of leisure programs and services. Practical application is required in experiential settings.
REC 168- Field Experience in Leisure Services 1 1 credit
Prerequisite: Department Approval
Initial experience in various leisure delivery settings at approved sites under qualified personnel. Approval required, 30 clock hours minimum.
REC 170- Foundations of Coaching 2 credits

REC 210- Study Tour in Sport & Leisure 2 credits
Opportunity to examine specified aspects of sport, domestically and/or globally. Students are required to attend pre- and post-travel seminars. As a central component of the course, students will experience first hand, on site observations of sport in its dimensions as play, recreation, athletics, and/or work. There is a fee attached to this course.
REC 238- Field Experience Leisure Services II 2-4 credits
Prerequisite: Department Approval
Field experience in approved leisure or therapeutic recreation service delivery systems with qualified supervisor during sophomore or junior year following completion of prerequisite major courses and approval, 60-120 hours minimum with exposure to various sites and clients.
REC 240- Fundamentals of Therapeutic Recreation 3 credits
Prerequisite: REC 163
Psychological, sociological, physiological, historical significance o therapeutic recreation; the philosophy, theories, and practices of health and human service professionals; needs and implications of therapeutic recreation with persons with disabilities; field experience required.
REC 260- Programming in Leisure Services 3 credits
Prerequisite: REC 161
Programming content and process including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of programs, services, resources, areas and facilities. Knowledge and understanding of the principles/procedures of marketing, budgeting, computer applications and technology applied to program delivery. Use of resources to promote and enhance leisure experiences.
REC 261 Medical Terminology 3 credits
Prerequisite: REC 163 or Approval
An Introduction to basic word elements-roots, suffixes, prefixes, and combining forms used by the health and human service professions. Knowledge of proper spelling, definitions, pronunciations, and usage of medical terms related to body systems.
REC 262- Facilities Design and Management in Leisure Services 3 credits
Prerequisite: REC 161
Knowledge of the principles and procedures for planning, designing, operating and maintaining leisure services, resources, areas and facilities. Study of standards, purchasing, selection and care of equipment. Design and implementation of risk management plans.
REC 270- Introduction to Tourism
Prerequisite: none
An introduction to tourism and tourism industries. Major elements of tourism as a sociocultural phenomenon and its management will be examined.
REC 313- Outdoor Programming 3 Credits
Prerequisite: none
Role of outdoor education and recreation in today's society; functions and policies, current issues, development of outdoor education programs and adventure challenge activities.
REC 329- Legal Aspects 3 Credits
Prerequisites: PE 160 or REC 161
Course study the legal system as it relates to sport, physical education, sports medicine, health and recreation in the areas of facility supervision, tort law, professional regulations, risk management, liability, negligence, defenses, contract law, and immunities. Special attention will be directed toward laws and court cases that are pertinent to the sport and recreation professional.
REC 330- Techniques in Therapeutic Recreation 3 credits
Prerequisite: REC 240
Ability to implement a variety of individual and group techniques, utilize a variety of assistive and adaptive devices and techniques, apply therapeutic recreation content and services, use instruction, supervision and leadership techniques and apply activity and task analysis in the delivery of services. Field experience required.
REC 341- Principles of Therapeutic Recreation 3 credits
Prerequisite: REC 240
Introduction to the therapeutic recreation process to design comprehensive and individual treatment plans, considering the interrelationships of health and human service professionals and standards of practice using case studies. Field experience required.
REC 355- Recreation for Diverse Populations 3 Credits
Prerequisites: REC 260
Study of the nature, implications, leadership techniques, activity modification and issues concerning the aged and individuals with disabilities. Laboratory experience included.
REC 360- Practical Research and Computer Applications 3 Credits
Prerequisite: TIER 1 Math and PE 160 or REC 161
Application of research
and evaluation design using computers and statistical techniques to assess,
plan and
evaluate leisure services. Articulate and advocate for leisure efficacy
in practice settings.
REC 362- Leisure Education and Counseling Techniques 3 Credits
Prerequisite: REC 240
Theory of group dynamics, leadership techniques and strategies, interpersonal relations, decision making, communication processes, therapeutic group interventions, helper relationships, and concepts and application of leisure education. Field experience required.

Study of the field of international tourism from the social scientific and applied perspectives.

Prerequisite: REC 260
Organization and administration of leisure agencies including personnel, budgeting, financing, organization policies behaviors and processes, marketing and public relations and application of computers and technology. legal, legislative and risk processes applied to leisure agencies.
REC 407- Therapeutic Recreation Programming 3 Credits
Prerequisite: REC 341
Application of therapeutic recreation process, to the design of intervention plans. Content includes documentation, protocols, critical pathways, and quality indicators. Field experience required.
REC 440- Professional Seminar 3 Credits
Prerequisite: Departmental Approva
Professional trends and issues including legislation, laws, credentialing, accreditation, ethical and social issues, regulations, advocacy and changes in management and health care. Student must join one professional organization. Internship requirements and placement procedures, processional practices ethics and behaviors, career transitions, credentialing application, employment and processionals resources and self assessment as a leisure and therapeutic recreation professional.
REC 450- Internship in Leisure or Therapeutic Recreation 12 Credits
Prerequisite: Departmental Approval
A full time, 15 week, 600 hour experience in an approved leisure or therapeutic recreation agency setting under the direction of a qualified leisure/therapeutic recreation specialists and university supervisor.
