Internship/Field Experience Description
Field experiences (REC 168 & REC 238) and an internship (REC 450) are included in the recreation program for several reasons. First, the three experiences serve as segments of the formal education process. These experiences, in conjunction with their classes, provide the finishing touches for the student entering the recreation fields. Second, entry into the fields usually requires experience on the part of the applicant. The field experiences and internship help the student meet this experience requirement. Third, the experiences often serve as a stepping stone to employment. At times the student is hired by the site with which the student is placed. At other times, the student networks with professionals in the field and makes valuable contacts that sometimes lead to employment opportunities. The experiences should be the most important learning tool in the student's college career. Students need to think about the career they want and begin now to work toward the necessary steps that will help achieve entry into that career field.
An integral part of the Recreation Program is the practical component. Each student will complete three experiences:
- REC 168 - Field Experience I: 30 hours (minimum) - 6 consecutive weeks (minimum) freshman level course
- REC 238 - Field Experience II: 60 to 120 hours (minimum) - 6 consecutive weeks (minimum) sophomore level course
- REC 450 - Internship: 480 clock hours (minimum) - 12 consecutive weeks (minimum) full time (40 hours per week) on the job placement.
