STRONGLY consider Renters' Insurance! Your personal belongings are NOT covered by Ashland University . In case of theft, fire, flood, etc. you are responsible. Your parents should check with their insurance agent to see if you'll be covered on their current homeowner's policy. If not, they may be able to purchase a rider to their policy to cover you. Or you can purchase your own renters' insurance policy from most any insurance agent. The cost is typically $100-150 for one year.

Confirm your apartment move-in date. Be sure to arrive at a time the office is open to process your move-in and sign out your keys.

Double check your Room Condition Report (a list should be provided for you) noting anything and everything that is broken, burned, cracked, chipped, dirty, etc. Any holes in the walls or screens, missing screens or windows, etc. If you don't take this action now, on move-out, you may be charged.

Read the rules carefully. You should be aware of any and all rules that may be a cause for dismissal from the Senior Apartments.

Before you move in , get together with your roommates and determine who will bring what. You don't need two microwaves or two toasters.

Read the roommate agreement sheet . It suggests “house rules” as well as who pays for what, when. Also, be aware that if a roommate moves out in the middle of the semester, you will have 30 days to replace that person or lose the apartment. It is up to you to find a qualified replacement. (Be sure to find trustworthy roommates!)

Roommate Items for Discussion

Selecting a roommate requires careful consideration. You'll be living just about as closely as two people can, so the more compatible you are, the more likely the association will be successful. Any relationship requires communication. Don't allow relatively minor issues to escalate. You have better things to do with your time! When a problem comes up, first – cool down. Then sit down and calmly, without interrupting each other or raising your voices, discuss the situation and arrive at a solution. Be mature enough to compromise!

A good way to determine compatibility is to work together to establish house policies or rules. Areas are categorized here. You can always add specifics. All roommates should agree to the rules.

Expenses : Who pays for food & how much? Talk about food for friends, household cleaning products, & other expenses. Who pays for damages? Consider a meal plan in Convo.

Study Time : Establish SACRED study times/days, etc. during which each roommate can study in the way most conducive to their learning. We are all here for an education first and foremost.

Sleep : Uninterrupted sleep is important. Who sleeps when? What time at night should the noise usually stop; how long in the morning should quiet be maintained if one of the roommates is sleeping.

Cleaning : Establish a schedule and stick to it! Split duties. Have specific rooms each person cleans. If there is a hassle over one room or another, have it so one person cleans it one week and another the next…Post cleaning schedule/assignments somewhere that every roommate can see it.

Personal Belongings & Borrowing : Is permission needed? Car, clothes, food, toothpaste, etc.

Guests : Are there any times that guests won't be allowed? Limit on number of guests? Overnight guests? Notice to roommates for guests staying longer than overnight. OK with permission of all roommates? Rules of behavior (don't let guests get you in trouble). What about guests eating YOUR food? (Remember to follow AU's visitation policy to avoid any university sanctions.)

Furniture (any non-university owned): And anything that more than one of you split the cost of. Who gets it when you move out?

Smoking/Drinking : Will not be permitted/tolerated in the apartments or on the apartment balconies. Drinking is not permitted on university property at all; any resident caught breaking this rule may lose his/her spot in the apartment. Do not risk ruining this opportunity for yourself, your roommates and everyone else!
