How to Apply for Graduate Loans

Step by Step for Students Enrolled in Graduate Degree-Granting Programs

Graduate loan applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to those applications submitted by April 30.

Students who apply for loans late may need to pay for tuition temporarily (i.e., credit card) until the loan is processed. The Student Accounts Office requires that payment for classes accompany registration unless a student has an approved Stafford Loan and all required paperwork processed. A student whose Stafford Loan has not yet received final approval or a student who has a private education loan that has not received final approval must submit payment with registration. The student may then request a refund check from the Student Accounts Office after the loan has been applied to his/her account and after the student has attended the first class session.

Students must reapply each spring to obtain a loan for the following academic year.

To apply, please complete the following steps:
  1. Be accepted for admission to a Doctoral/Master's Degree Programs and intend to enroll at least half-time ( 3 credits) per term.
  2. Complete the AU Graduate Student Loan Application   for the appropriate academic year. Note: AU will not certify a private education loan unless the student has completed the appropriate AU Loan Application.
