Outside Scholarship Information


The following federal and state programs are available to any eligible undergraduate students. This may include AU students enrolled in the Evening/Weekend, the Nursing, or the Lorain County Community College programs. Students attending part time may receive the Federal Pell Grant.

Federal Academic Competitiveness Grant Program (ACG). Eligible students will receive $750 for the first academic year of study and $1,300 for the second. To qualify, the student must be a U.S. citizen; Federal Pell Grant recipient; full-time in a degree program; have completed a rigorous secondary school program of study; and maintain a 3.0 grade point average. U.S. Dept. of Ed. notifies each applicant who is potentially eligible based upon FAFSA information. Ashland University will then receive notification of potentially eligible candidates and is required to verify information before awarding the grant.

The National SMART Grant Program. Eligible students will be awarded $4000 each year for their third and fourth academic years. To qualify, the student must be a U.S. citizen; a Federal Pell recipient; enrolled full-time in a degree program; enrolled at a four-year degree-granting institution; major in physical, life or computer science, engineering, mathematics, technology, a critical foreign language, psychology, natural resources and conservation, and maintain a 3.0 grade point average each term. Students must enroll for at least one class from major for each term scholarship is to be received. Ashland University is responsible for identifying eligible students prior to awarding. Federal Pell Grant. Students seeking financial assistance may apply for this need-based federal grant by filing the FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA. The amount of this grant varies and ranges from $890 to $4731.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant. AU awards these federal funds to students who have high financial need. To apply, file the FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA. The amount of this grant varies.

Federal TEACH Grant. Eligible students may receive $4000 per year with a maximum of $16,000. The grant is limited to students who plan to teach in a Title I school in shortage areas – math, science, foreign language, bilingual education, special education, reading specialist or high-need field approved by the Secretary of Education. The grant becomes a loan if the student does not fulfill four years of teaching within eight years of graduation and interest on the loan is retroactive. To qualify student must file a FAFSA and be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen; have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 or score above the 75th percentile on the ACT/SAT; enroll in coursework necessary to begin a career in teaching ; and sign a TEACH Grant agreement to serve. Procedures for applying for this grant will be developed once the Federal Government provides final regulations for the program. Ohio Choice Grant. This state program provides a grant of $660 for each full-time student who is a resident of Ohio; has not enrolled full time at a college or university prior to July 1, 1984; attends a private, four-year institution; and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree. To receive this grant, eligible students must complete and return the Ashland University Financial Aid Application.

Ohio Instructional Grant. This program is available to eligible students who are residents of Ohio. To apply for this program, a student must file the FAFSA. Eligibility is based on family income and number of dependents. The award ranges from $444 to $5,466.

Ohio College Opportunity Grant. Is available to eligible students who are residents of Ohio. To apply for this program, a student must file the FAFSA. Eligibility is based upon the Expected Family Contribution number. The award ranges from $600 to $4,922.

Ohio Academic Scholarship. Awarded to one student from each Ohio high school who will enroll in an Ohio college or university. The amount of the scholarship is $2,205 per year. Contact a high school guidance counselor for more information.


Ohio War Orphan Scholarship. Awarded to students whose parent served at least 90 days of active duty during a declared war or conflict and is severely disabled or deceased as a result of service. Applications are available from high school guidance counselors or veterans offices. The amount available for private education is $5,100.

Ohio National Guard Tuition Grant. This program is offered to eligible members of the National Guard. This grant pays the average state-assisted university’s tuition costs at private institutions recognized by the Ohio Board of Regents. The grant is available for undergraduate studies. Pennsylvania State Grant. This grant is available to eligible full-time students who are residents of Pennsylvania. To apply for this grant, file the FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA. The amount varies up to $600.
