Roommate Bill of Rights
The following Roommate Bill of Rights is a reminder to each resident of his or her responsibility to roommates. One's enjoyment of life in a residential unit will depend, to a large extent, on the thoughtful consideration that students demonstrate for each other.
Basic Rights of a Roommate
The right to read and study free from undue interference in one's room. Unreasonable noise and other distractions inhibit the exercise of this right. The right to sleep without undue disturbance from noise, guest of roommate(s). The right to expect that a roommate will respect one's personal belongings. The right to a clean environment in which to live. The right to free access to one's room and facilities without pressure from roommate(s). The right to privacy. The right to host guests with the expectation that guests are to respect the rights of the host roommate(s) and other hall residents. The right to address grievances. The residence life staff are available for assistance. The right to be free from fear of intimidation, physical and/or emotional harm. The right to expect reasonable cooperation and the use of "room shared" appliances (telephone, refrigerator, etc.) and a commitment to honor agreed upon payment procedures.Remember: To be a mature adult is to accept responsibility for the welfare of others. In the event of roommate difficulties, first communicate concerns to the roommate to try to resolve problems. If that is unsuccessful, contact the Resident Assistant, Senior Resident Assistant or Residence Director.
