Throughout college, preparation is the key to success. Knowing the proper means on how to prepare can be very difficult. It takes a lot of work and skill. In becoming an Academic Advising Assistant, you can communicate so of these sought after tips to others in order to make them as successful at it. It allows you to assist other students with some of the same concerns you have, such as note taking, test preparation, scheduling concerns, etc.
Being an advising assistant offers a wide array of opportunities. Assisting any student with any type of academic difficulty will always be the first priority. Each of these duties below are performed in hopes of doing that. They include working with campus organizations to involve academics, putting forth ideas in a wide variety of suggested academic programs, answering basic scheduling questions, serving as a referral person, meeting regularly with the faculty advisor from the major field, helping promote programs and office functions, and participating in training with the Assistant Director of Academic Advising. Common concerns amongst students are advising/scheduling issues, developing a four year plan, understanding/using the catalog, general study skills, and understanding the concepts of various learning styles. You will be expected to help them with these and assist them with class difficulty as well. Such class concerns can include balancing academics and life to lower stress levels, preparing for exams, note taking, doing research in different medias, studying in the most effective manner, reading/understanding/highlighting textbooks, and assisting students with academic and career plans. In addition to one on one sessions, assisting freshmen will be a big part of the responsiblity too. Presentations over both the catalog and common study concerns are done during IUL classes. Working one on one with them on deciding a major is also a big part of the task.
Working as an advising assistant allows you to broaden your communication skills while learning everything necessary on the keys to being successful academically.
