What is Academic Advising?

   Ashland University

Note: All information regarding scheduling classes, curriculum guides, and core classes can be found at the Registrar Office site

At Ashland University, academic advising is viewed as a student centered process and is an integral part of the higher education experience. Ashland University's goal is to have its undergraduate students work with a faculty advisor in conjunction with the Academic Advising Directors that are assigned to each college. This collaborative team effort is intended to guide the students' academic progress toward graduation and a rewarding post-graduate future

In addition, the Academic Advising Directors can assist undergraduate students who are trying to decide on a major of study. The Directors can outline specific requirements for a students' chosen major and guide them through the scheduling process. Once a student has selected a major, they will be assigned to a faculty advisor within their major of study.

Advising of first year students is coordinated through advisors who teach the Introduction to University Life course. During this course, incoming students are encouraged to declare a major or select a college of interest so that they can be appropriately matched to a faculty member within their area of study. Although the final responsibility always rests with the student, the faculty advisor's aim in coordination with the Directors of Academic Advising is to promote self-sufficiency as the student works toward undergraduate and post-graduate goals.
